Meet Nikki Walshe
Nikki Walshe MVB is a resident vet at Greenmount Equine Hospital, Limerick.
After qualifying from University College Dublin with first class honours degree in Veterinary Medicine, Nikki headed down under to begin her career in Australia.
Her first job was as an intern in a large equine hospital where she learned best practice from highly qualified experts. From there she went to a 10 vet practice in the heart of the New Zealand equine industry where she learned her trade in ambulatory practice.
Coming back to Australia 15 months later she took a position as racetrack vet in Melbourne where she worked with a huge number of horses in a very fast moving, intense environment. Leaving Melbourne she headed north to the horse capital of Australia – “The Hunter Valley”. According to Nikki this was the most challenging of her jobs ‘down under’, working in a very busy practice and having responsibility for the breeding management of a large stud.
In 2015 Nikki travelled home to Ireland with the hope to get a position in a specialist equine practice. Her timing couldn’t have been more perfect as Donncha and Paul Houlihan had set up a modern, well equipped hospital right at her back door. The experience she gathered over the previous years made her the perfect candidate for the job and she started at Greenmount Equine Hospital in April 2015.
Nikki comments “Greenmount has a strong ethos of best practice and endeavour to always be thorough in our clinical approach to all cases. It is certainly a practice I take pride in and one I am delighted to be associated with.”
We’re thrilled to have Nikki on our blogger team to provide HorsePlay readers with some invaluable veterinary care insights.
